Best 7 Seater Car Sardinia
The often overlooked island of Sardinia has long since been a great tourist destination and a great place to learn about some puzzling history. The fact of the matter is that Sardinia has a history dating back to the Nuragic civilization of 1500 BC and still to this day has some ancient ruins that are quite lovely. During the Roman Empire, the coasts were often raided by pirates and were often very violent. However, in this day and age, it is a quiet and cool Mediterranean climate with a lovely atmosphere that is well worth hiking, driving, and swimming around. Many people love to go diving here in hopes of uncovering some treasure, but even if you don’t – it is still a great place to swim! In this day and age, instead of battles on coastal towns in Sardinia, there is an abundance of fun tourism to be had.
Best Sardinia Seven Seater Drives
Most people often skip Sardinia, but those who love a great adventure will come here and enjoy the quiet islands and coastal drives to themselves. The SS125 highway runs all the way from Cagliari in the south up to Olbia in the northeast. While the direct drive takes around 3.5 hours, most people do it much slower so they can stop at many of the smaller towns and villages along the route. After all, the drive runs from top to bottom!
Cagliari is most famous for being the capital of Sardinia and offers a great introduction to Sardinian culture. It also boasts some of the best panoramic views on the island, especially from the historic Bastione di Saint Remy.
Olbia, on the other hand, serves as the main ferry port and airport hub in the northeast and is a brilliant place to relax. If you keep heading just south past Olbia in your hire car, you’ll find yourself in one of the most popular resort destinations on the island: San Teodoro. This vibrant area is famous for its Caribbean-style beaches like La Cinta. On the drive down, most people opt to stop in Budoni. Budoni is a stunning coastal resort town that draws in well over 50,000 visitors every summer because of the incredible natural beauty it has to offer. The whole drive, as short as it is, is quite wonderful and shouldn’t be missed.
Sardinia Car Hire Highlights
Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean, offering a massive, varied coastline and a rugged interior. To truly see it, you need to get away from the main resorts and explore the hidden coves and mountain villages at your own pace.
The island is served by three main airports: Cagliari (CAG) in the south, Olbia (OLB) in the northeast, and Alghero (AHO) in the northwest. Because public transport between these regions is limited and slow, hiring a car is highly recommended. Booking a 7-seater or larger MPV is particularly useful for families, providing the extra space needed for luggage, beach gear, and a comfortable drive up into the Gennargentu mountains without being tied to restrictive bus timetables.
Keep in mind that driving distances are deceptive here. Navigating the winding roads of the mountainous interior takes longer than it looks on a map. Plan your driving routes with extra time built in so you can safely pull over at scenic viewpoints or take unexpected detours down to the coast.
Recommended 7 and 8 Seater Drives in Sardinia
Three excellent driving routes to help you explore the island, from the famous northern coastline to historic inland sites. Easily accessible from Sardinia’s main airports.
Costa Smeralda
Full day · Coastal Route & Beaches
From Olbia, take the SS125 and coastal roads north past Porto Cervo, the upscale heart of the region. This route leads to iconic coves like Spiaggia del Principe and Capriccioli, where you can park up for a day of swimming. Choosing a 7-seater means you have plenty of room to pack sun loungers, parasols, and a large cool box for the family, allowing you to move between beaches comfortably.
Su Nuraxi di Barumini
Half day · UNESCO Bronze Age Site
Head inland from Cagliari on the SS131 to reach Su Nuraxi, Sardinia’s finest example of mysterious, ancient nuraghi stone towers. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features a central tower and surrounding village ruins dating back over 3,000 years. The drive through the rolling Marmilla hills offers quiet, open countryside views and passes through traditional hilltop villages.
Gulf of Orosei
Full day · Mountain Passes & Dramatic Cliffs
Drive down the east coast to Cala Gonone, the primary gateway to the spectacular Gulf of Orosei. While famous coves like Cala Luna are best reached by local boat trips, the dramatic drive down through the rugged Supramonte mountains is a highlight on its own. Use Cala Gonone as a base to explore smaller local beaches by car throughout the afternoon.
Driving a 7 Seater Car Rental in Sardinia
Sardinia has an excellent, well-maintained road network. Dual carriageways connect all the major cities and airports, and unlike mainland Italy, there are no toll roads in Sardinia—all major highways are completely free to use. Inland roads meander through incredibly picturesque, mountainous terrain and are generally not congested, making driving a larger 7-seater or 8-seater vehicle a comfortable and stress-free experience.
The legal blood-alcohol limit in Italy is 0.5 g/l (grams per litre) for experienced drivers. However, please note that a strict 0.0 g/l zero-tolerance limit applies to professional drivers and anyone who has held their driving licence for less than three years.
Standard Speed Limits in Sardinia
- Urban / Built-up Areas: 50 kph
- Secondary / Local Roads: 90 kph
- Main Highways (Superstrade): 110 kph
Best time to visit Sardinia
Due to its clement weather, Sardinia can be visited at any time of the year. Even during the winter months, the temperatures rarely drop below 14 °C and most days are sunny.
