Recommended 7 Seater Car Hire Gran Canaria Drives
Off the northwest coast of Africa lies a group of Spanish islands that draw in hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. While here, they lay back in the sun and enjoy the island life. Some never leave because they find it so enjoyable. However, one of these islands is considered more special than the others and that is the great island of Gran Canaria. Oddly enough, the island’s capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is one of the largest cities in Spain.
What makes this place so great is that people often refer to it as “the little continent”, thanks to the variety of different cultures, landscapes and activities the island actually offers. With comfortable weather year-round, you’ll certainly find yourself enjoying the great food and hospitable lifestyle that you can only find on the islands off Spain. A 7 or 9 seater gives the whole group the room to explore it together, with luggage and beach kit packed in.
Five Great Drives From Gran Canaria Airport
From mountain villages above the clouds to canal-lined fishing harbours, here are five self-drive routes that make the most of a roomy people carrier.
National Parks & Mountain Villages
Tejeda & Guayadeque
If you are one for national parks, one of the most rewarding drives on the island heads up into the mountains to the village of Tejeda. Here you will find great views while relaxing at just over 2,000 metres high. Another lovely option is Guayadeque, where you can sit amongst the almond trees and watch the sunset. It is well worth it.
Maspalomas Sand Dunes
South coast, via GC-1
If you find yourself on the south side of the island, take the GC-1 motorway down to Maspalomas Costa Canaria, where you can walk among the giant rolling sand dunes. It is an easy run from the airport and a firm family favourite, with a long beach and plenty of parking nearby.
Puerto de Mogán
Southwest coast, via GC-1
Continue past Maspalomas along the coast and you reach Puerto de Mogán, a pretty fishing village known as “Little Venice” for its flower-lined canals and bridges. The drive hugs the coastline with sweeping sea views, and the relaxed harbour, sandy beach and seafood restaurants make it an easy day out for groups travelling together.
Roque Nublo
Central highlands
For the island’s most iconic view, drive up into the central highlands towards Roque Nublo, a towering volcanic rock formation that rises above the clouds. The mountain roads are winding but the scenery is spectacular, and it pairs naturally with a stop in Tejeda. A short walk from the car park brings you to the base of the rock, ideal for photos.
Agaete & the Northwest Valley
Northwest coast
Head to the green northwest of the island and explore the Agaete valley, where coffee is actually grown on the slopes. Down at the coast, the natural sea pools at Las Salinas de Agaete are a lovely spot for a swim, and the fresh fish restaurants along the harbour are well regarded. It is a quieter, lush side of Gran Canaria that many visitors miss.
Good to Know: Driving in Gran Canaria
A few practical pointers before you collect your 7 or 9 seater. Driving here is straightforward, but knowing the local rules on tolls, parking and mountain roads will make your trip smoother.
No Toll Roads
Good news for road trips: there are no toll roads anywhere on Gran Canaria. The main GC-1 motorway runs free from the airport down to the southern resorts and up to Las Palmas, so you can explore the whole island without paying a single charge.
Parking by Line Colour
Kerb markings tell you the rules. Blue lines mean paid pay-and-display parking, usually around €1 per hour or €6 a day. White or yellow lines mean no parking. In Las Palmas, green lines are resident-only. Always buy a ticket where machines are present.
Speed Limits
Limits follow mainland Spain: 120 km/h on the motorway, 90 km/h on open roads, and 50 km/h in towns and cities unless signed otherwise. Speed cameras are in use, and fines for non-residents are often payable on the spot.
Mountain Roads
The inland roads to Tejeda and Roque Nublo are scenic but narrow and winding, with tight curves and steep drops. Take them slowly and use the horn on blind bends. On longer mountain days it helps to add a free additional driver so you can share the wheel.
Fuel & Petrol Stations
Fuel is widely available from chains like Repsol, Cepsa, Shell and BP, and prices are low by European standards. Many stations are open 24 hours. Fill up before returning the vehicle to avoid refuelling charges, as the nearest station to the airport is a short drive away.
Rules of the Road
Drive on the right, and seatbelts are required for all passengers. The drink-drive limit is 0.5 g/l, lower than the UK. Using a handheld phone is strictly forbidden, even when stationary. Watch for local drivers who often skip indicators at roundabouts.
History
If you are a lover of history, look no further than discovering the lives of the earliest inhabitants of the island known as the Guanche. To see how these people once lived, take the trip to Mundo Aborigen and see their realistic villages. The drive from Maspalomas to San Bartolome is near to the village of Fataga and well worth the drive on its own. Along the way, you’ll get to see great views and an abundance of different landscapes pass by. Have your camera ready!
