The best drive on the island is from El Paso towards San Idrio, Brena Baja. This is known as “The Old Road” and heads over the backbone of the island, up and over some of the most scenic sights. Along the way, you’ll head through scattered Pine trees before making your way to heights of almost 1500 meters above the sea level. Here, you’ll be within sights of the volcanic cone of Mount Quemada and gets views of the black lava formations that have spilled over the area and hardened. At the peak, you’ll be at a place known as Refugio El Pilar, which is a great place to have a picnic and enjoy the views of the eastern coast of the island. If you hop on the designated hiking trails, some of them will actually take you to the volcanic cone! It is best to do this hike and drive in the early morning, as it provides the best views.

Another great drive is to begin in Santa Cruz, head onto the LP3 Road and make your way to the tunnels through the mountain that lead to La Palma’s second-biggest town of Los Llanos de Aridane, which is great to walk around and enjoy the historical city centre.
