7-Seater Drives Around Zurich
Zurich is a brilliant base for day trips by 7-seater — the airport depot puts you straight on the A1/A3 motorways, with lakes, mountains and the Rhine Falls all within an hour’s drive. Five family-friendly outings to plan from your pickup.
Uetliberg viewpoint
Zurich’s local mountain sits just 8 km southwest of the city centre, with sweeping panoramic views over the lake and out to the Alps on clear days. Note: you can’t drive to the summit — cars must park at the Uitikon-Waldegg or Triemli lots at the base, then take the SZU cog railway (10 minutes) or hike up. From your Zurich depot it’s a 20-minute drive to the parking, then 30 minutes more to the summit.
Lake Zurich perimeter drive
The banana-shaped lake stretches 28 km from Zurich south-east toward the mountains — and the perimeter drive around both shores is one of the best easy day trips in Switzerland. Stop at Rapperswil for the medieval old town and rose gardens, or pick a shoreside spot for windsurfing, kayaking, paddleboarding or wakeboarding (rental schools dot the western shore around Wädenswil and Richterswil). Allow 3-4 hours driving plus stops.
Rhine Falls (Rheinfall)
Europe’s most powerful plainland waterfall by water volume sits 46 km north of Zurich near Schaffhausen — around a 40-minute drive via the A1 and A4. Boat tours run right up to the base of the falls and there are viewing platforms on both banks. The Castle Laufen viewpoint on the south side has the best photo angles; the north side offers easier parking and family-friendly trails.
Hoch-Ybrig Ski School
Just an hour’s drive south of Zurich, Hoch-Ybrig is one of the closest family-friendly ski areas to the city — and its ski school is well-known for beginner and intermediate lessons with multi-lingual instructors (English, German, French, Italian). Around 50 km of marked pistes, mostly red and blue runs, plus a snow park and toboggan tracks. Good choice for a 7-seater family group with mixed ability levels. Winter tyres essential for the drive.
Amden winter sports
Around an hour’s drive south-east of Zurich, Amden sits above Lake Walensee and is a winter sports favourite for families. Chairlifts and gondolas take you to the start of the toboggan runs and beginner ski slopes, so you don’t have to hike up before the fun starts. The drive via the A3 motorway runs alongside the lake itself for the final 20 minutes — one of the prettier approach drives in eastern Switzerland.
